Ich bin ja so ein Kandidat, der sich fast nie an das hält was er sich so vornimmt… aber die folgenden 10 Bücher reizen mich dann doch ganz besonders.

An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir
Part of (Series): An Ember in the Ashes
Published by Harper Voyager
Genres: Fiction, Dystopian
Pages: Paperback, 464 pages

Short Description:

Under the Martial Empire, defiance is met with death.

When Laia’s grandparents are brutally murdered and her brother arrested for treason by the empire, the only people she has left to turn to are the rebels.
But in exchange for their help in saving her brother, they demand that Laia spy on the ruthless Commandant of Blackcliff, the Empire’s greatest military academy. Should she fail it’s more than her brother’s freedom at risk . . . Laia’s very life is at stake.
There, she meets Elias, the academy’s finest soldier. But Elias wants only to be free of the tyranny he’s being trained to enforce. He and Laia will soon realize that their destinies are intertwined – and that their choices will change the fate of the Empire itself.

Brilliant work. I’ve been sucked in without even realizing it and even though it’s dark, depressing and lonely at times… this book will always give you hope.

The story:
It’s an easy enough world-building that only seems to grow slowly while you tumble through the pages. It’s nothing that has never been before, but it is solid, comprehensible and relatable. You will be guided to chose a side only to realize you might not have seen all the aspects of any of them… the apparently bad and the strikingly good side. The story will make you draw circles and leave you feeling as if you cannot decide what course is the right one.
A barren land with barely any hope for the enslaved people and a ruling nation that does not seem to produce happy, content people who will fight because it’s the right thing to do. The Martials will fight because they are taught to do it.

Beautiful truths lie between the pages and they will make you think of this book for long after you’ve put it down. I cannot recommend it enough.

The characters:
The main characters are drawn as humans: full of flaws, but nothing you as a reader wouldn’t understand. Their actions and thoughts speak volumes about their hearts and what kind of people they are. You simply have to fall for them and start rooting for their victory. I have been unsure of Laia for the longest time, but the moment my hesitation fell, I was completely taken by her. She is an amazing woman with a big heart and a courage even she never thought she had. Elias, however, was different. Right from the beginning, I knew I liked him. He had been so sure that Blackcliff was more of a prison than anything else and that the life he’s been forced to live is not for him. He wants to be free and fully so, freedom of mind and soul is what he seeks while Laia seeks only to free her brother from prison. I’m sure that both of them will be seeking something else before long and I look forward to their adventure together in „A Torch against the Night“.

Recommendation: If you are a fan of great fantasy, sometimes brutal and barren but honest and beautifully tinged with hope, you will love this story. It will weave a web that entangles you til you’ve turned the last page…

Teaser Tuesdays is hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can participate! The rules are:

  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

My teaser is from An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir

For the rest of the day, I do my best to act like a Mask on the verge of graduation – smug, brutish, violent. It’s like covering myself in filth.

I just started reading this today, as I got it for my birthday last week. So far I cannot say much with the couple pages that I’m in, but I hope I will love this book. It sounds so interesting and one of my favourite booktubers (Katytastic) loved this book. I hope that is a good sign.

Hi peeps!

I have something today that surprised me too: There is a Taylor Swift Book TAG. Wow. Well, why not?! I found it here while browsing the web and remembered I had seen it before. Where? At Katytastic.

And because I am actually rather fond of Taylor Swift’s music, I decided to do this. (And I apologize in advance for the gif spam.)
